The “party” is over, now what? The season sounds we look forward to every year will be ending soon. No, not silver bells, reindeer hooves on the roof or carolers. It’s the Annual Election Period ads! Strangers are telling you about free benefits you can get (but not telling you any of the details) and that there’s something much better than what you currently have (and they don’t even know what you have, right?)
You may think back - it was like clockwork. You knew it was October and the Annual Election Period was right around the corner. You started getting those telltale mailers and phone calls. Imagine how you’re going to feel when it’s over – no daily stacks of mail and no phone calls except from people you know. If you haven’t already, you’ll get your new ID card to start using January 1. Make sure you destroy your old card and replace with your new card. Keep your formulary book handy to check the “tier” your prescriptions fall into. (Yes, the lower the number of the tier, the less expensive your prescription will be.) It’s not your average book that you got in the mail to just throw away – it may be useful when you get new prescriptions. When you’re enjoying all those yummy sweets, think about your teeth. Do you have a dental plan that covers having your teeth cleaned and x-rays? More and more people are having minor and major dental work including root canals, crowns, implants and dentures. Each of these services is expensive and it gets real expensive when you have a combination of these or more than one crown or implant. What is the most prudent dental plan for you - your checkbook or an insurance policy? One plan you pay 100% of the cost and the other plan you only pay a percent of the cost. Whichever plan you select, take care of your teeth. You don’t really want to “outlive” you teeth, do you? Add to your New Year’s Resolution list to have your eyes examined. A routine eye exam can help you maintain good vision and assure you that you don’t have any medical issues related to your eyes. You may even notice that you see things you never knew were there, see details on your TV or drive a little better with new lenses. Maybe you will be fortunate to still have good eye sight. When the fireplace is roaring and the holiday music is playing be thankful that you reviewed and updated your 2019 health and prescription plans. And be particularly thankful that you have a health and/or prescription plan to help you in 2020. Thank you for reading my column and thank you for the many phone calls and questions. I hope you have a great holiday season. As the year ends and 2020 begins, remember when you have questions or concerns call 501-868-6650 and say “Caroline, can we talk?”
